Official USA Pickleball is not played on grass; most recreational pickleball is played on hard courts or indoor wooden courts. But the love of the game and the lack of a traditional pickleball court hasn’t stopped pickleball enthusiasts. In fact, a number of lawn pickleball variations have sprung up.

Challenges of Playing Pickleball on Grass

There are several challenges when playing pickleball on grass. The main one is the effect of the ball bouncing differently on different types of turf. Grass can be long, short, thick, thin, dry, or wet. All of these factors will affect how the ball bounces and rolls. This can make it difficult to control the game and make it more difficult to score points.

In addition, playing pickleball on grass can also be more challenging because the surface is not level. This can make it difficult to keep the ball in play and make it more difficult to execute shots. And finally, the weather can also play a factor when playing pickleball on grass. If it is too hot, the surface can become sticky and the ball can slow down. If it is too cold, the surface can become hard and the ball can bounce higher than usual. And rain makes it slick and dangerous.

Despite the challenges, playing pickleball on grass can be a fun way to enjoy a recreational game. And with a little practice, you can learn how to control the game and make it more enjoyable.

So, can pickleball be played on grass? The answer is yes! But there are some challenges that you need to be aware of before you head out to the court. With a little practice, you can overcome these challenges and enjoy a game of lawn pickleball.

US Lawn Pickleball Association – pickleball on grass

The US Lawn Pickleball Association was formed by a group in Utah just for this reason. They even have a national championship and cup. Here’s a fun video to watch how they play on the grass in the backyard. They look like they’re having a lot of fun including costumes, a few brewskies, and the ultimate pickleball cup!

Lawn pickleball is played with a foam ball to provide some bounce on grass and has some variations to the traditional pickleball rules to compensate for the challenges of playing on grass.

Sandy Pickleball – pickleball on grass

Sandy Pickleball was formed during covid because the pickleball courts were always full. Instead of giving up, they bought a portable pickleball setup and installed it on the grass at the park. They had to modify the game because the balls don’t bounce well on the grass. Over time, they continued to evolve the game by modifying the rules so that it could be played not only in backyard grass but on beaches and other locations.

Sandy Pickleball is played on a smaller court and combines elements of volleyball and badminton but is played with a traditional pickleball paddle and ball.

In the past, when people inquired if pickleball could be played on grass, I answered no. And that answer still stands true for traditional USAPA official pickleball– to an extent. However, similar to how pickleball was born from ingenuity and cobbled together badminton, tennis, and ping-pong equipment; where there is a will, there is a way!

So if you love pickleball and don’t have access to a court, get creative and try playing on grass. It might not be traditional pickleball, but it’s a fun way to get together with friends and enjoy the game.
