Pickleball, Margaritas, and Parties — Oh My!

Calling all pickleball lovers! The time is quickly approaching for USA National Pickleball Championship, (November 5th-13th) and this is one event you do not want to miss. While watching match after match of pickleball players is already exciting — everything is better with margaritas. In honor of Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville sponsoring the event, you are hereby commissioned to have at least one margarita to mark the occasion.

In fact, why not just make it a party? There is always a good reason to have friends over and the USA Pickleball Championship is certainly one of those. So, call over all of your friends who love, and even the ones that don’t, to be a part of this exciting tournament. Just don’t forget the margaritas!

Margaritas are simple and quick to make in large batches so you have no excuse not to invite your pickleball friends over to join in on the fun. If you and tequila don’t have a great friendship, the trick is — to drink better tequila! The reason most people hate tequila is due to bad experiences. (Those bad experiences usually are from hangovers worth the memory books.) If you have a hate for tequila, it was most likely made by bottom-shelf tequila. So let’s erase those bad memories and replace them with good ones. There are plenty of tequila options that will change your mind in one sip (and won’t break the bank)

Tequila Types

Before we get into how to make a margarita, let’s go through a quick tequila rundown. There are four major tequilas that are used regularly: blanco, repasado, anejo, and extra anejo.

  • Blanco — or silver as some call it, is a baby tequila and is only aged for two months or less. Don’t let the age of this liquor fool you — silver tequila is the best to use for margaritas and countless other cocktails and will be used in the recipe below.
  • Reposado — aged for two months to a year and is great to sip or to use in your favorite tequila-based cocktail.
  • Anejo — aged at least a year and fantastic just to sip on neat or over ice. (Try subbing Anejo tequila in your next Old Fashioned order, you won’t be disappointed.)
  • Extra Anejo — this tequila is aged for at least three years and is the crème de a crème of tequila. You can never go wrong sipping on an extra Anejo tequila.

Now that you have a slight idea of the differences between tequila (and just how many different styles there are) let’s get to the good stuff! Margaritas shouldn’t be intimidating as they only require four ingredients and less than five minutes out of your day. So, let’s get started!

2oz Blanco tequila
1/2 oz Cointreau (or any other orange liquor)

Margaritaville pickleball championship party decorations

If you are already going along with a Margaritaville theme for your party, you might as well take the full plunge and decorate to your tropical heart’s desire. Pick up some colorful parrots to place around the house, lei each friend that walks through the door, and have plenty of island décor to transport you to somewhere with white sands and blue ocean.

Fake palm branches are an easy way to decorate a food table, strategically place some symbolic Margaritaville parrots, or you can even use actual margarita glasses as décor. No matter how you choose to decorate be sure to use bright colors that will transport you, and your guests, to the Caribbean. Nothing about the beach is dull so neither should your decorations.
