A Quick Guide to Pickleball

Pickleball is a sport that has elements of ping pong, tennis, and badminton. If you are familiar with any of these sports, you will likely be able to pick up pickleball fairly easily. This guide will give you a quick overview of how pickleball is played.

Here are the following guides:

  • Pickleball is played on a court that is 20 feet by 44 feet, which is smaller than a tennis court, and the same size as a badminton court.
  • The net is placed 36 inches high in the middle of the court.
  • There are two or four players. Two people play singles and four people play doubles.
  • You use a paddle and a plastic ball with holes in it.
  • The object of the game is to hit the ball over the net into your opponent’s court. You earn a point if they are unable to return it.
  • You can only score points when you are serving the ball.
  • A player serves the ball by hitting it underhand over the net into the service box of their opponent diagonally across from them.
  • On a serve, the ball must bounce twice – once before the receiver returns it and then before it is returned by the server.
  • After the ball is returned by the server, players can hit it in the air (volley) or let it bounce before hitting it.
  • The server then alternates between left and right service boxes after each point is made. Players switch sides after each game.
  • The first team to score 11 points wins the game. If the score is tied at 10-10, then the first team to win two more points wins the game.

Now that you know the basics of how pickleball is played, try it out for yourself! You can find pickleball courts in many parks and recreation centers. Or, if you have a tennis or badminton court in your backyard, you can set up a pickleball court. Invite your friends and family over for a game and have fun!
